History of Spencer, Oklahoma
Spencer was first settled in 1887 by Richard Garvin Spencer, the great-grandson of Benjamin Spencer, who had first settled in the Indian Territories in the late 18th century. At the time, Spencer was located on the state boundary between Indian Territory and the State of Missouri. After a long legal battle, Spencer was admitted as the first town in the state of Oklahoma. Spencer was also known as “Watford’s Station.” In 1890, Spencer Post office opened. In 1892, Spencer was incorporated as a city. Today, Spencer is a bustling city with many history-filled and beautiful buildings and museums to explore. Spencer is also home to the Spencer Country Club, which was established in 1922. Visit the Spencer Museum – The Spencer Museum is one of the top attractions in Spencer. It was established in 1911 as the Watford County Museum and has an extensive collection of artifacts and photographs that tell the story of Spencer and Watford County, Oklahoma. It also features a small art gallery that hosts occasional exhibitions of local and regional artists. Admission is free. Hours are Tues-Fri 9am-noon, 1pm-5pm, Sat 10am-2pm, Sun 11am-3pm. – Explore the American Indian Cultural Center – The American Indian Cultural Center is a beautiful museum that features artifacts and art from the Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapaho tribes. Admission is free. Hours are Tues-Sun 9am-5pm. – Visit the Watford County Courthouse – The Watford County Courthouse is the oldest courthouse in Oklahoma and the second oldest in the United States. Built in 1897, the building has served as a courthouse and jail, as well as a movie theater, a library, and a federal post office. It is a historic landmark and is still in use as a courthouse. Admission is free. Hours are Tues-Fri 8am-4pm and Sun 1-4pm. – Go for a horseback ride – Spencer is a great place to go horseback riding. The city is home to the Oklahoma Pony Club, a group of professional riders that offer trail rides on a variety of trails and locations throughout the state. The Oklahoma Pony Club also offers camps and clinics throughout the year where kids and adults can learn to ride and compete in competitive trail riding events. Trail rides are offered year-round. The Spencer Inn is a great place to stay. If you decide to check out the Spencer Inn, be sure to ask for the free daily ice cream social! While these are not the best hotels in the world, they are still great places to stay at an affordable price. If you don’t mind staying in an RV Park, Spencer has a few of these as well. The Pleasant View RV Park is one of these. It is located just off of the Spencer highway, and it is an older park that is still well-maintained, providing nice and clean RV sites that are protected from the elements. There is also a pool, a playground, and a dry wash available for use. The Pleasant View is a good option if you are looking for something a little less expensive.
